Until moving to Prescott recently, Larry and Sara lived in central Illinois most of their lives. Over the years, they developed a love and respect for the outdoors and wildlife.
Larry began his artistic career in 1989 as a wood carver. He began carving wildfowl, but expanded to include realistic animals, relief and stylized carvings. Sara has done needlework, basket making and other creative projects through the years as well. Because of their love of nature and natural materials, they have expanded their interests and talents to working with gourds.
Through the medium of gourds, they have combined their individual artistic abilities to something they now work on together. They gather natural materials not only from their own property but from suppliers across the country.
Sara and Larry co-taught decorative gourd classes at several locations. They started teaching at The Woodcraft Shop at Bettendorf, Iowa in 2003. They have taught classes at the International Woodcarving Congress in Davenport, IA (2005-2009) and the Doane Experience at Crete, NE (2007-2013). They also taught classes at several locations in Arizona.
Sara and Larry’s artwork has been featured in several galleries in the Midwest andSouthwest such as Art2 in Prescott, AZ, Firefly Gallery in Jerome, AZ, Torres Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, The National Museum of Woodcarving, Custer, SD and the Western Heritage Gallery in Jerome, AZ.
In the fall of 2005, Sara and Larry have were and still are invited to participate as Artists in Residence at Custer State Park in South Dakota. During the fall of 2014 they completed their 10th year as Artists in Residence.
Besides teaching classes and working in South Dakota, Sara and Larry participate in art and craft shows across the country. Examples are: Morton Pumpkin Festival (Morton, IL), Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival (Custer, SD), Arizona Gourd Show (Casa Grande, AZ) and Valle Country Art Fair (Valle Crucis, NC).
Both have retired from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Sara was a Licensed Clinic Professional Counselor in the Center for Wellness and Counseling. Larry is an emeritus faculty where he was a college professor, teaching Business Computer Systems in the Foster College of Business Administration.
